NFL for Beginners: Downs, Scoring and the Clock

The NFL plays American football, a different sport from association football. The easiest starting point is possession: an offence tries to advance the ball while a defence tries to stop it or take possession. Downs, field position and the clock explain much of what happens between scoring plays.

What a down means

A down is an opportunity to run a play. The offence normally has four downs to gain ten yards and earn a new first down. If it fails to reach the required distance, possession can pass to the other side. Teams therefore often punt on fourth down when the risk of giving away favourable field position is too high.

For a simple example, gaining six yards on first down leaves four yards to gain for the next first down. A later penalty or loss of yardage can change the situation. Read the on-screen down-and-distance graphic before judging the play choice.

How scoring works

A touchdown scores six points. The following try can add one or two depending on the chosen play and outcome. A field goal scores three, while a safety normally gives the opposing team two. The current rulebook governs special cases; highlights can omit the possession details needed to understand an unusual score.

Why the clock matters

Game time and real viewing time are different. Stoppages, timeouts and reviews affect the broadcast length. Near the end, a team protecting a lead may prioritise keeping the clock moving, while a trailing team may trade risk for speed.

Do not assume that every incomplete pass, out-of-bounds play or penalty has an identical clock effect in every situation. Use the official rules for the exact circumstance.

Watch your first drive

Follow only the offence's starting field position, down, distance and final outcome. Add formations and tactical terms later. This keeps the first viewing manageable without reducing the sport to touchdowns alone. For schedules and results, use the NFL's own dated pages rather than an old search snippet. Our learning resources can help organise a simple observation sheet.
