India and Bangladesh signed the Ganga/Ganges water-sharing treaty at New Delhi on 12 December 1996. The treaty text states a thirty-year duration and renewal through mutual consent. That makes December 2026 relevant to its term, but the calendar alone cannot establish what the two governments have agreed about the future.
Read the actual treaty clause
A treaty's duration should come from its text rather than a shortened news summary. The linked government-hosted document provides the original basis for the term and renewal condition. A discussion about extending an arrangement is not the same as a completed renewal.
This treaty concerns India and Bangladesh and sharing at Farakka. It should not be confused with the Indus Waters Treaty involving India and Pakistan. Similar regional water headlines can refer to different rivers, parties and legal instruments.
Why seasonal flow matters
Water-sharing arrangements need a defined location, period and measurement method. River flow varies across seasons, so an annual total alone does not explain availability during a dry period. Units and observation dates are essential when comparing claims about water volume.
Avoid treating a map or a single photograph as proof of the amount released. Hydrological measurements require a documented source and method. A lower water level in one image can have more than one explanation.
Separate negotiation from implementation
An official meeting, a proposal, a joint statement and a signed instrument are different stages. Use the wording appropriate to the evidence. A prediction that talks will succeed should not be reported as a new binding agreement.
For a current status, check dated communications from the relevant government departments and Joint Rivers Commission. This guide does not claim a completed extension or an interruption in sharing without such evidence.
A student research task
Make a timeline containing the signing date, duration clause and any later verified official announcement. Add a map showing the relevant river and measurement location. Label unresolved questions clearly rather than filling them with assumptions. Our country guide supports the political-geography terminology.
